John Dewey Junior High / Elementary School

After the opening of the new Chartiers Valley Senior High School and students moving from the former Scott Township High School, the building would begin a new life as a junior high school. Beginning in 1960, John Dewey Junior High School would house students in seventh through ninth grades.

At the beginning of the 1972 - 1973 school year, 9th and 10th grade students who previously would have attended John Dewey Junior High School were sent to the new Chartiers Valley High School.

The 1973 - 1974 school year brought more changes to the student body. At the beginning of the year, 7th and 8th graders from John Dewey Junior High School report to the Chartiers Valley Middle School on Swallow Hill Road. This was several years before the Chartiers Valley Middle School would relocate to the Thoms Run Road complex. This consolidation brought about the final change for the school, becoming the John Dewey Elementary School. From 1973 - 1979, the elementary school would provide for students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

The school would see its final classes in 1978 - 1979, after which it closed its doors for the final time as an education institution. We’re unsure where the K - 6 students would have transferred to at this point in time. The Chartiers Valley Middle School provided for students in seventh and eighth grade only from the 70s through 1994 when it moved to the Thoms Run Road Complex. It’s likely the students from Dewey Elementary transferred to other local elementary schools, but we’re unsure which specifically. If you know, please contact us!

It would later be sold for commercial use, and still stands as of 2024. The Clark High School engraving above the main entrance has been covered and now displays the address of the building.
